HSA/FSA Eligibility Guide

Healthcare Payments made simple

At NESCA, many clients can use HSA, FSA, HRA and other tax advantaged accounts to pay for neuropsychological services if certain IRS requirements are met. This guide outlines eligibility and documentation requirements to ensure a smooth usage and reimbursement process.

Eligibility and Documentation Requirements

Eligible Medical Conditions

Patients may qualify if undergoing neuropsychological services for diagnosis or treatment of a medical condition. Some services (e.g., neuropsychology evaluations, ASD diagnostics) are inherently diagnostic, so the diagnosis results from the evaluation. In those cases, the service itself still qualifies even though the condition hasn't been confirmed yet.

Common qualifying diagnoses include:

ADHD Assessment & Treatment
Neuropsychological evaluations and therapeutic services are eligible
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Diagnostic evaluations requiring professional assessment
Learning Disabilities
Educational assessments for diagnosed conditions
Traumatic Brain Injury
Post-injury cognitive evaluation and rehabilitation
Other Through Doctor Recommendation
  • Memory disorders and cognitive decline
  • Speech and language disorders
  • Developmental delays requiring assessment
  • Cognitive impairments affecting daily function

Required Documentation for Approval

Neuropsychological services qualify when tied to a diagnosable condition. Some services — like Neuropsychological Evaluations and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Diagnostic Assessments — are automatically eligible and do not require a Letter of Medical Necessity (LOMN). Other services may require additional documentation. Here's what you'll need to ensure that you're able to utilize your HSA/FSA funds at NESCA:

1
Letter of Medical Necessity (Required for Most)
Required for coaching or planning services (e.g., psychoeducational counseling, Executive Function Coaching). Not required, but helpful for reimbursement of Neuropsychology Evaluations or ASD Diagnostic Assessments.
2
Detailed Receipts or Invoices
Detailed payment records, including date of service, description of service, provider, and amount paid.
3
Claim Form (Required for Reimbursement)
Most administrators require their own version of a claim form for reimbursement. We can help you submit this information.
